Bed Bugs
Mr.Killer Bed Bugs Control
Bed bugs are wingless insects that are oval in shape and 5-6mm long as an adult. They are a rusty brown in colour and change to a deeper reddish-brown after a meal of blood. An adult bedbug can live for 6 months at room temperatures of around 20C and much longer in colder climates. After mating, each female lays 2-3 eggs a day throughout her lifespan. The cream coloured eggs are approximately 1mm in length and will hatch within around 10 days at room temperature, but longer in cooler conditions.
Bed Bugs are found in virtually every place people tend to gather, including homes, hotels, schools, offices, retail stores and even public transportation; they travel easily and are transported via luggage, clothing, bedding and furniture.
Bed bugs are small parasitic insects that feed on human blood by piercing the skin. They do not live on humans or burrow into the skin.
They are very mobile, but only move short distances to feed, so are commonly found near food (blood) sources.
Generally, bed bugs are more of a nuisance pest than a serious health threat. There is no evidence to indicate that they transmit any infectious disease.
Bed bugs can live up to six months at room temperature and can survive for long periods without a blood meal.
They usually feed during the night, but bed bugs can be opportunistic feeders (feed whenever the opportunity is present).
Are bed bugs harmful to humans?
Not really. Bed bugs aren’t known to carry serious diseases, but their bite can cause an allergic reaction in some people.
When do bed bugs breed?
As an “interior” pest, bed bugs generally breed all year round. A female bed bug can lay hundreds of eggs over a 2-month period.
What can I do to minimise bed bugs in my home?
Some targeted housekeeping in your bedrooms can reduce the likelihood of a bed bug infestation.
- Examine mattresses and bed frames regularly (bed bugs particularly like hiding along mattress seams).
- Vacuum bedrooms thoroughly, including carpets, mattresses, floorboards and skirting boards.
- Wash your bedding in hot water on a weekly basis (allow to dry naturally in the sun, or in a hot clothes dryer).
- Inspect 2nd hand beds and mattresses carefully before buying them.
- Repair cracks and crevices in walls.
- Keep cupboards, drawers and wardrobes clean and tidy.
In addition to high levels of bedroom hygiene, it’s advisable to leave suitcases in the garage or bathroom overnight if you’ve been travelling (to tease out bed bugs).
